I installed Hexen II through the disc, patched it up to date, and followed the instructions to install the new stuff (deleteing everything I was told to). However, when I run any of the .exe's (GL or hardware), I recieve the following message, and the game does not run:
PR_LoadStrings: couldn't load strings.txt
I downloaded the zip from the Quake Engine website under the Hexen II section (the website lists the version as June 26th, 2007 I believe). Is there an updated version from this date, or did I do something wrong while installing?

| Thats pretty strang.. it should work. I will have a look at the documentation, and do a test of this myself tonight too and see if I get the same. I did do a decent test on everything, so its pretty stange that its not working. Just to test, install the game in a simple path for testing, eg: "C:\hexen2".. short with no spaces, though I dont think its an issue, but lets test this in anyway.  If you do get it working, lemme know and what the possible problem was. I'll do my own testing in the meantime aswell.

If it helps, here are my system specs:
Windows XP (Media Center Edition)
Dell Inspiron 19300
Pentium M Processor (2 gigs)
1 gig of ram
My video card is a GEFORCE Go 6800, whose drivers are no longer supported, but I'm able to run games such as Doom 3 or Half Life 2 with no problems. You'd think I'd be able to run something thats ten years old .
I will try to reinstall it to a simpler folder just to see if that works. My hexen2 folder is labeled as "/Hexen II/", so maybe thats an issue? I also know that when I installed the original version of the game, I did not tell the disc to install any GL stuff. Just standard hardware Hexen II.
Perhaps I need to delete more? I still have the "help" and "splash" folders with all their contents in my Hexen II folder. Do these folders need to disappear before the game will function?
If anything comes up positive, I'll post again. Any luck on your side?

| Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I am getting the same problem with the most recent version of UQE. Has been any breakthroughs yet, or will I need to go back to the standard game (non-UQE)?

I think I have fixed the problem myself. All I did was move "strings.txt", "progs.dat", and "progs2.dat" from my backup of the data1 folder of the original Hexen II files to the data1 folder of the UQE Hexen II files. It became playable after that.
